David Byrne, the renowned rock icon still actively involved in new projects, credits a significant portion of his happiness to being a father. In an interview with PEOPLE for this week’s issue, the former frontman of Talking Heads, who is now 71 years old, candidly discusses his deep love for his family.
Byrne expresses that a great source of joy in his life is witnessing his daughter, Malu Abeni Valentine Byrne, pursue her passions. He welcomed Malu in 1989 with his then-wife Adelle Lutz. Malu has now become a jewelry designer, and the singer of “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)” couldn’t be prouder that she’s chosen a creative career path. Seeing his 34-year-old daughter find her own way brings immense satisfaction to him as a father.
Interestingly, this wasn’t always the case. When Malu initially went to college, Byrne believes his influence may have had a somewhat negative impact, as she initially wanted to attend a fashion school to learn the business side of things, stating, “I don’t want to be an artist.” However, she later realized that a creative approach had its merits, especially when she encountered subjects like accounting.
In addition to his daughter, Byrne draws inspiration from his 5-year-old grandson, Bo. He marvels at Bo’s exploration and discovery of the world, finding it truly inspiring.
Although Byrne hasn’t played his own music for his grandson yet, he notes that Malu has introduced him to it. He enjoys making up songs and singing them to Bo to gauge his preferences.
